Using thin steel layering dies—often referred to as wafer-thin dies—with roller mills like the Sizzix Big Shot Switch, Spellbinders, or similar electric and hand-crank machines is a standard process that works exceptionally well with shrink plastic. These shapes will shrink to approximately half their size during the heating process.

Tips for Successful Cutting

To achieve clean, consistent cuts when working with shrink plastic, consider these best practices:

  • The Sandwich: Since these are thin metal dies, you generally need to use the manufacturer-recommended platform system for "wafer-thin" or "thin" dies.

  • Multiple Passes: Because shrink plastic can be denser or have a different texture than paper, running the die through your machine twice (forward and backward) ensures the die fully penetrates the material.

  • Intricate Details: If your design is very detailed, running the die through at a slight angle or placing it toward the edge of the cutting plates can sometimes provide a cleaner cut.

  • Alignment: When layering, if you are using multiple dies at once, use a small piece of low-tack painter's tape or washi tape to secure the dies to the shrink plastic before running them through the machine to prevent them from shifting.
